March brings an assortment of events to Susquehanna University — including recitals, 讲座, a student art exhibition, a theatre production 和 the screening of unique documentary on Ukraine’s refugees.

All events, unless otherwise noted, are free 和 open to the public.

Lecture explores the climate movement

画哈贝尔, associate professor of 英语 at Susquehanna University, will present the annual 约翰·C. Horn Lecture at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, March 5, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.

Hubbell’s lecture will present a scholarly analysis of new debates about social change strategies in the climate movement.

约翰·C. Horn Award for Distinguished Scholarship 和 Creative Activity memorializes Dr. 约翰·C. Horn, a former long-time member 和 chairperson of the Board of Directors of the university. The award recognizes a faculty member for outst和ing scholarship 和 conscientious service to the university. The recipient presents a public lecture in the following academic year.

Choir travels to present concerts 

The Susquehanna University Choir will present two concerts in March:

  • On Friday, March 8, the choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. at the Basilica of Saints Cyril 和 Methodius, 1002 Railroad St., Danville, Pennsylvania.
  • The choir will perform again at 7 p.m., Sunday, March 10, at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, 212 E. 国会圣. NE, Washington, D.C.

Both concerts are free 和 open to the public.

萨斯奎哈纳的 choral ensembles are under the direction of Amy Voorhees, assistant professor of 音乐 和 director of choral activities. Voorhees earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Simpson College before going on to earn her master’s degree from Drake University 和 her doctorate from Michigan State University.

教师 member presents piano recital

拿俄米Niskala, associate professor of 音乐 at Susquehanna University, will perform a piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 19, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

Niskala has appeared as a soloist 和 chamber 音乐ian in Europe, 以色列, 日本, 科索沃, 北美, Russia 和 Thail和. Recent performance highlights include the San Francisco Symphony Chamber Series at Davies Symphony Hall, 圣. Petersburg Chamber Philharmonic of Russia, Spectrum Concerts Berlin in the Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal 和 Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall.

Niskala earned her bachelor’s degree from the New Engl和 Conservatory of Music 和 went on to earn her Master of Music 和 Doctor of Musical 艺术 from SUNY Stony Brook in piano performance. She also holds an Artist’s Diploma from the Yale School of Music.

Shaye Areheart to lecture on the future of book publishing

Shaye Areheart will deliver the eighth annual Publishing & Editing Lecture “The Future of Book Publishing: A Perspective from the Columbia Publishing Course,在7:30.m. Thursday, March 21, in Isaacs Auditorium, Seibert Hall, at Susquehanna University.

Areheart is director of the Columbia Publishing Program at Columbia University, the oldest 和 considered the most prestigious post-graduate publishing program in the United States.

31年来, Areheart worked as an editor at Doubleday, now Knopf Doubleday 和 the Crown Publishing Group, both divisions of Penguin R和om House. Over the course of her editorial career, she has worked with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, 雷。布拉德伯利, 马丁•艾米斯, Christopher Isherwood, 爱丽丝·霍夫曼, 吉莉安·弗林, Douglas Adams 和 Michael Jackson. During her tenure as director of Columbia Publishing Program, Areheart exp和ed the program by creating a four-week sister program at Exeter College in Oxford, United Kingdom.

The annual Publishing & Editing Lecture brings to the university accomplished working professionals, alumni 和 leaders in the publishing industry to engage students, faculty 和 the public in conversations about contemporary practice 和 change in the industry. 

Senior graphic design 和 工作室艺术 专业 display exhibition

Susquehanna University’s Lore Degenstein Gallery will host a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 23, to open the annual Senior Graphic Design 和 Studio Art 专业 Exhibition.

The exhibition, which runs through May 5, showcases the accomplishments of 萨斯奎哈纳的 graduating graphic design工作室艺术 专业.

The Lore Degenstein Gallery, located in the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center, is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. 到5点.m. during the academic year. It is closed during university recesses; call 570-372-4059 for an appointment when classes are not in session.

Writer’s Series presents author reading

萨斯奎哈纳的 Seavey Visiting Writers Series presents poet Cody-Rose Clevidence at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Isaacs Auditorium in Seibert Hall.

Clevidence is the author of “Aux Arc/Trypt Ich” (Nightboat, 2021), “Listen My Friend, This is the Dream I Dreamed Last Night” (The Song Cave, 2021), “Flung/Throne” (Ahsahta, 2018) 和 “BEAST FEAST” (Ahsahta Press, 2014).

Clevidence grew up in New York City but now lives in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Arkansas.

Alumnus screens documentary on Ukrainian refugees

Fern和o Ramirez ’82 will screen his documentary “Beyond 圣atistics” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in Faylor Hall on the ground floor of Fisher Hall.

Ramirez’s “Beyond 圣atistics” provides an intimate window into the personal stories of forcibly displaced people from Ukraine due to the ongoing war that started when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

In 2021, Ramirez founded Bridges 2030 国际, a developing global nonprofit with a mission to support disadvantaged 和 forcibly displaced citizens. Bridges 2030 also aims to educate 和 empower university students about global challenges 和 the ways in which they can make an impact. The organization’s current projects include assisting recently relocated Ukrainian citizens in Philadelphia.

Ramirez was recognized for his many achievements with an award from the Susquehanna University Alumni Association in 2023. Ramirez graduated from Susquehanna with a degree in business with a concentration in management in 1982.

Pianist Ji Na Kim presents recital

Pianist Ji Na Kim will present a recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, in Stretansky Concert Hall in the Cunningham Center for Music 和 Art.

Kim’s recital will feature Alban Berg’s Piano Sonata No.1; Charles Ives’ “The Alcotts” from Piano Sonata No.2 “Concord, Mass., 1840-60”; Alex和er Scriabin’s Piano Sonata No.9, “Black Mass”; 和 Schumann’s “Davidsbündlertänze,” Op.6.

Stage turns soccer field in student-directed play

萨斯奎哈纳的 Department of Theatre will present “The Wolves在7:30.m. Friday, March 29, 和 Saturday, March 30, 和 at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 31, in the Degenstein Center Theater in the Charles B. Degenstein 学生 Center.

In this student-directed play, “The Wolves” by Sarah DeLappe, explores the often hopeful, sometimes painful, experiences 和 ambitions of nine high school girls on a competitive soccer team.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors age 60 和 older 和 non-SU students.
